Literacy / RE – Journeys

Session 1- Think about a journey in your life. Write a recount about where you went, what you did and how you felt. Try to use some good vocabulary and try to extend sentences with connectives and fronted adverbials.

Session 2 – Read the information About Christian pilgrimages. Can you match the pictures and information together?

Session 3 – Complete the reading comprehension about Lourdes

Session 4 and 5 – Big write – Christian baptisms. Baptisms are an important start of a journey in a Christian’s life. Can you find more about what happens and why they are important. Read the power point, watch the video about baptisms and research using the internet to find out more and write a report about what you found out.

The Titanic - Newspaper reports

Session 1 - Look at the main features of a news paper report.

Session 2 - Research what the Titanic was and the list the events that happened.

Session 3 - Read the witness statements. How do you think they were feeling and thinking at the different times on the journey? Can you write some witness statements of your own?

Session 4 and 5 - Big write - Can you plan your own Newspaper report, edit and write it up?

Polar explorers

Session 1 – Have a go at the reading comprehension  on Earnest Shackleton.

Session 2 – Find out more about other famous explorers and what they did.

Session 3 – Find out more and write a fact file about Robert Falcon Scott. watch this video here.

Session 4 – Find more out about what it would be like to be an  explorer. What would the conditions be like? What training would you need to do? What things would you need to take?

Session 5 – Big Write –Imagine you are Robert Scott going on a polar expedition. Can you write a diary of a day on your journey? Remember to include how you are feeling and describe what it is like.

The Polar lands

Session 1 – Use the internet to find facts about the Artic and Antarctic 

Session 2- Write a description of what the Antarctic or Artic is like

Session 3 – Complete the reading comprehension about polar animals

Session 4 and 5 – Big write -Find out about a polar animal of your choice. Write a report about it using pictures, captions, headings and subheadings

Literacy - deforestation

Session 1 - reading comprehension – rainforest deforestation

Session 2- can you use the pictures to write a report about what might be happening?

Session 3 - research and make notes using the internet about deforestation and why we need to stop it.       Make a poster to explain why we need to stop deforestation

Session 4 -for and against – can you decide which statements are for deforestation and which are against?

Session 5Big write - Write a balanced report explaining the for and against reasons of deforestation. In the last paragraph explain what you think what you could do to solve some problems.

Literacy – The great Kapok Tree – By Lynne Cherry

Session 1 -Read the story and listen to the story on you tube -The Great Kapok Tree. Complete the comprehension work sheet about the book.

Session 2- Think about the animals in the story. Can you explain why each animal didn’t want the tree cut down? Can you think of more reasons why? Can you produce a new book cover and blurb for the book?

Session 3 –Can you find some super vocabulary to describe one of the animals and can you write a description of it?

Session 4 -Can you re-write the ending of the story so it is different?

Session 5 BIG WRITE. Can you re-write the story from the point of view of the man who was chopping the tree down. Remember to use good vocabulary, conjunctions and different ways to start your story?

Life in the rainforest

 

This week, we will be finding out more  at life in the rainforests. 

  • SPAG - Can you put the rainforest vocabulary into alphabetical order and then write definitions for them?
  • Reading - Complete the reading comprehension on the different tribes that live in the rainforests.
  • Read the information cards about tribes of the rainforest. can you put them into two piles -fact and opinion.
  • Writing -Find out more about one of the tribes that live in the rainforest.
  • Big write -Many of the tribes have no contact with other places. this means that they would have no technology - phones, computers, electricity etc. Do you think you would like to live there? See if you can find good and bad reasons to live there and then explain why you would / would not like to live there.

Book Week

We have chosen a book for you and your child to read at home. We could like you to read the book and complete the activities listed on the next page.

It is ok for your child to read the story independently and it is also ok for an adult to read some of the story as well while reading together please pause occasionally to ask questions and discuss the story, but not every page as it’s important for children to also enjoy the story. There are some questions below to help you.

Before reading the book:

  • What do you think this story will be about?
  • What might happen in the story?
  • What genre will this story     be? E.g. fantasy, comedy, horror.
  • What do we call the writing on the back of the book? (Blurb) or What does the blurb tell us?

During the reading of the book:

  • What has happened so far? Is it what you expected to happen? 
  • What might happen next?
  • How do you think the story might end?
  • Who is your favourite character?  Why?
  • Who is the character you like least?  Why?
  • Find 2 sentences, which describe the setting.
  • Is the plot fast or slow moving?  Find some evidence in the text, which supports your view.

At the end of the book:

  • Which part of the story is your favourite / least favourite?  Why?
  • Would you change any part of the story?  How?
  • Would you change any of the characters?  How?
  • Which part of the story was the funniest, scariest, saddest, and happiest?  Find some evidence in the text to support your opinion.
  • Would you like to read another book by this author?  Why?
  • Does your opinion of this character change during the story?  How?  Why?

Word work

  • When you come across a new and unfamiliar word, complete the corresponding activities to help you understand and be able to use it for yourself:
  • Write a synonym for your word
  •  Write an antonym for your word
  • Use the word in a sentence of your own
  • Create an alliteration containing your word and 2 others
  • Choose a page in your book how many example can you find of these word classes:
  • an adjective
  • a noun
  • a verb
  • a preposition

Writing tasks

  • Stop at any point in the story and write a prediction for what could happen next in the story.
  • Write a letter as a character in the book to another character in the book, a new invented character or a real-life person.
  • Re- tell an event from the story from another characters point of view.
  • Write a diary entry for a character in the story.
  • Write a sequel to the story

Creative tasks

  • Write poems inspired by events/situations in the book
  • Draw pictures of characters from the book
  • Draw pictures of locations from the book
  • Compose a sound story - using instruments to convey the events in the book.
  • Write a song about the story.
  • Create a suitable cover for the book
  • Design an advert for the book (for the press, radio or TV... for the last two choose suitable extracts to perform if needed)

Finally, please write a review of your book. Everyone in year 4 has a different book so we can share them with all the children in our class, please use the worksheet provided.

Country focus – Brazil

  • Find out where Brazil is on a map. What continent is it in? What is the capital city? Where are the rainforests? What is the important river called that goes through  Brazil? What famous places or monuments are there in Brazil? What is the flag like? Can you draw it?
  • Can you write a fact file about Brazil?
  • Find more about about Brazil by doing the reading comprehension about Brazil.
  • Can you find more out and write a report about a famous place or landmark in
  • Can you write an advert for people to visit Brazil, explaining all the good reasons why you could go there?

Reading and writing Activities: Where the Forest meets the Sea BY Jeannie Baker

2              What is the story about? Can you find 5 verbs, nouns and adjectives in the story?

3              Can you improve the sentence below to make it more interesting?

 

I follow a creek into a rain forest. I pretend it is a long time ago. The plants try to hold me back. I sit very still and watch and listen.   I find a tree.

 

4              Look at this picture from the book.  (in files)  Can you write a description to go with it? Try to use some super vocabulary?

 

5              Can you write your own story of visiting a rain forest island? Use the storyboard and my ideas to help you.

 

Think about these ideas:

Paragraph 1: Arrive on the island – what do you see? How do you feel?

Paragraph 2: Find a creek and follow it into the rain forest. How does the water feel on your feet? What do you see in the water?

Paragraph 3: In the middle of the forest with lots of trees. How do you feel now? what does it smell like ? Describe the setting.

Paragraph 4: Find the ancient tree –what does it look like and make you feel?

Paragraph 5: What animal do you see– what do you see (describe it) and what do you do?

Paragraph 6:  Time to go  – what do you feel now? You share the fish with your dad on the beach.

 

Remember to re-read and check your writing and make sure you have good vocabulary, fronted adverbials and conjunctions in!

  • Test yourself on last week’s spellings and practice the new ones. Write a sentence using each word and remember to make sure you know what it means.
  • Keep a diary or Journal of next week. Put in it what you do and how you feel.
  • Could you write a non- fiction report (on paper on the computer) about everything you have learnt about World War 2?
  • Could you write a time slip story where you went back in time to World War Two?

Week commencing 23rd March

Reading

  • Do a book review on your favourite book
  • Practice your vocabulary - Reading Games 
  • In your reading book – make a list of nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs you can find. Can you find any connectives, pronouns or determiners?
  • Draw a new front cover for a favourite book

 

Writing

  • Have a go at some literacy games - Top Marks 
  • Write a list poem about what you would find in a wizards hat
  • Write a play script using the story of Goldilocks and the three bears. Remember prompts in brackets
  • Find as many words with the prefixes pre, un, mis, re
  • Improve this sentence: The dragon was big, scary and breathed fire.
  • Can you write a super description of a dragon from How to Train your Dragon? Illustrate it
