Phonics

Week Commencing 13th July

  • This week try and focus on Phase 4 from Letters and Sounds. The aim of Phase 4 is to consolidate your knowledge and to spell words which have adjacent consonants.
  • View examples of these words on the Phase 4 sound mat below.
  • Read the words listed above, saying each word clearly.
  • After reading the words maybe you could have a go at spelling different words. Ask your adult to say a word to you and then try and spell it.
  • Practise your Phase 4 skills by clicking on games and activities from Phase 4 on Phonics Play.
  • Keep practising your tricky words from Phases 2 and 3. If you are confident with these words then practise reading Phase 4 tricky words. These are all listed below.
  • Apply your phonic skills when reading and writing independently by having a go at sounding out your own words.

Week Commencing 6th July

  • Apply your phonic skills when reading and writing independently. 
  • Make sure you can read and write the tricky words on the lists below and to spot these when reading. It will really help you when you start Year 1.
  • Keep reading the words on the Reception lists to make sure you can read all these words fluently and confidently. You will then be ready to start with the Year 1 words in September.
  • Apply your phonic skills by daily practise on Phonics Play - phases 2, 3 and 4. There are lots of fun games and activities that will help you become confident with your blending and segmenting using all the sounds we have learnt.

Week Commencing 29th June

  • Revise all the sound from Phase 2 to Phase 4.
  • Use the activities and games on Phonics Play to apply your sound knowledge. Click on the link below.
  • When reading and writing independently sound out your own words.
  • Read on sight words from the Tricky Word list and the Reception High Frequency words.
  • It will help you get off to a flying start in Year 1 if you are confident with all the Reception words. You will then be able to start working straight away on the Year 1 words.
     

Week Commencing 22nd June

  • This week in your phonics learning focus on the digraphs (2 letters that make 1 sound): ee, ea, ai, ay
  • Think of words that have these sounds and write them down in a list i.e. seed, sheep, tea, beach, rain, play etc. Sound out your own words when writing.
  • Read your list of words then to an adult.
  • Continue to apply your phonic skills by carrying out activities on phonics play - click on the link below.
  • Continue to practise reading on sight the tricky words and high frequency words from the Reception list.

Week Commencing 15th June

  • Carry out the phonic sheets sent home in your learning packs. We are using all the sounds from phase 2 to phase 4 in our own reading and writing.
  • Focus on the sounds: ch, sh, th, ng, nk and qu. Can you think of words that have these sounds? Sound out and write the words you can think of.
  • Apply your phonic skills when reading and writing independently.
  • Continue to practise reading your tricky words and the Reception high frequency words.
  • Test out your phonic skills by carrying out the games and activities on Phonics Play.

Week Commencing 8th June

  • Practise all of the sounds from Phase 2 to 4. 
  • Use the activities on phonics play to apply these sounds when reading words.
  • Remember to keep practising your tricky words and Reception high frequency words. Find the lists of words we need to know below. 
  • Remember to also practise spelling these words too.

Week Commencing 1st June

  • Keep practising all of the sounds we have learnt so far - Phase 2 to Phase 4. Visit phonics play by clicking on the link below - you will be able to apply your phonic skills when playing different games and completing tasks.
  • We are going to be really thinking about spelling tricky words correctly. Use the tricky word lists below to practise reading each word. When you read each word, try and identify the tricky bit of it i.e. to, was etc.
  • Look at a word, say it, then cover it, write it and then check to see if your spelling is correct. Remember tricky words do try to trick us so we have to be extra watchful for the tricky bits when spelling.

Week Commencing 18th May

  • Keep reading the tricky words from Phase 2 and Phase 3 - see the list below. Once you can read all the words confidently, then practise spelling each word.
  • Write different sentences which contain at least one tricky word from the list.
  • Try out the different activities on Phonics Play by clicking on the link below. Remember to visit Phase 2, 3 and 4 activities.
  • Can you think of words which contain the digraphs, 'ay' and 'ai' i.e. play, stay, snail, rain etc? Write a list of the words and then read them to an adult.
  • Can you read the high frequency words from the Reception list? If you can read each word confidently, then try spelling the words.

Week Commencing 11th May

  • Apply your phonic skills when reading and writing independently. Remember to sound out your own words when reading and writing.
  • Practise all the sounds we have covered so far. Clink on the link below to practise your phonic skills. Remember to go on phase 2, phase 3 and phase 4 activities.
  • This week try and think of words that have these sounds in - qu, ng, nk, and ck. Can you  write down the words that you think of. Remember to sound out your own words when writing them down i.e. queen, ring, link, clock.
  • Keep practising your tricky words and the high frequency words from the Reception word list.

Week Commencing 4th May

  • Use the link below to practise all the sounds we have covered so far. Focus on Phase 3 and phase 4 activities.
  • Keep reading and spelling the tricky words from Phase 2 and Phase 3.
  • Practise applying your phonic skills by sounding out your own words when reading.
  • Focus on the 'ch', 'sh' and 'th' sounds. Can you find some objects around your house and garden that contain these sounds i.e. shed, shoes, chocolate, bath etc. Can you write down the name of each object, once you have found it?

Week Commencing 27th April

  • Play 'I Spy' with your family.
  • Visit Phonics Play and revise the sounds of Phase 3 and try Phase 4 activities - click on the link below. 
  • Read and Spell words from the Reception list.
  • Read and spell Phase 2 and phase 3 tricky words.

 

 

Week commencing 20th April

  • Revise the sounds from Letters and Sounds Phase 3 which have already been sent home. Can you say each sound? Can you think of words that have that sound in?
  • Read and then spell the Reception High Frequency words.
  • Use Phonics Play online to complete Phase 3 tasks and activities. Try also activities from Phase 4.
  • Read and spell the tricky words from Phase 2 and 3 which have already been sent home.

Week commencing 23rd March

 

  • Practise sounds and phonic homework sheets sent home each week
  • Apply phonic skills by carrying out different activities on phonics play.
