What is a castle?

We started our castle topic by finding out what castles were. What they were made from and why they were built. 

Motte and Bailey castles

In this lesson we found out about one of the earliest types of castles,  Motte and Bailey castles. We labelled a diagram showing the different parts of a Motte and Bailey castle.

Life in a castle

We learnt about what life was like for the people who lived in castles and compared it to how we live now. As part of our learning we found out about the different jobs and roles people had within the castle and also what life was like for people who lived outside of the castle walls.  

Pontefract Castle

Pontefract Castle is only 12 miles from where we live. We used Good Earth to navigate from our school to Pontefract Castle. 

Why is Pontefract Castle important to the history of England? 

We learnt some important facts about Pontefract castle and then, in groups, we presented them to the class. We tried really hard to remember the things that we had learnt.
