Phonics

Children in Nursery will focus on Phase 1 of Letters and Sounds. Phase 1 of Letters and Sounds concentrates on developing children's speaking and listening skills and lays the foundations for the phonic work in Reception class. The emphasis in Nursery is to help children attune to the sounds all around us and to develop oral blending and segmenting skills. In the summer term before moving to Reception class, children start to work with the set 1 sounds from the Read Write Inc programme. 

Children in Reception class will have a daily phonics lesson where we will be learning the letter sounds and learning how to blend sounds together to make words.

We use the Read Write Inc (RWI) phonics programme. This is a proven synthetic phonics programme that teaches children how to read, write and spell. We use a toy frog called 'Fred' which shows the children how to say the sounds and then blend these together to make words. RWI is also used to teach the skills of spelling and writing.
