Early Years

EYFS Curriculum

In the EYFS children embark on a journey of discovery and exploration. We create a happy and caring environment where all children feel valued and safe. Children will have the opportunity to develop positive relationships with all the adults and their peers within our setting. The importance of positive relationships, communication, health and well-being and self-regulation are key drivers in our curriculum and every day practice. We also value the importance of early literacy skills and aim for all our children to develop a love of books, stories, rhymes and poems.

Our curriculum has been designed to enable all our children to acquire knowledge, skills and vocabulary which can be built upon as the year progresses, thus providing secure foundations for future years. Our curriculum is designed for all our children to create a broad range of experiences and opportunities which will help everyone to achieve their potential and develop a love of learning and an enquiring mind.

Throughout the school day children will take part in whole class, small group and adult directed tasks as well as having lots of time to access the provision independently. Adults model and extend play, language and vocabulary by being alongside children in their play. Modelling, encouraging and extending back and forth conversations, self-regulation, the use of vocabulary and language, being respectful and using good manners are all vital factors of our everyday dialogue and practice.

In our EYFS we work as a unit. Nursery and Reception children have their own designated  areas for whole class teaching sessions. Following the class input, children can access the shared areas both indoors and out. We also have timetabled sessions for the library, the hall and the adjacent wooded area. Throughout play children will be exposed to curriculum based knowledge, skills and vocabulary. Children initiate their own ideas and learn the skills of negotiation, communication, independence, resilience and patience.

As we teach children independence skills, our timetable will adapt across the year as we help prepare children for their transition into the next stage of their learning journey.

In our EYFS we are safe and happy, enjoy a challenge, celebrate diversity, enjoy good friendships and relationships and aim to be the best version of ourselves.

Please speak to a member of our team if you have any queries or comments. We are always happy to listen and value the importance of working closely with all our families.

Please view our half termly plans, which provide detailed information of the key knowledge and vocabulary we plan to teach under each theme.
